Tough economic times mean more grandparents are raising their grandkids.  

The first year of the Great Recession saw a spike in the number of grandparents acting as primary caregivers, says a Pew research report examining the economy and family structure. Currently one child in ten lives with a grandparent, a share which, says the report, has seen a steady rise over the past decade, with a sharp increase in the year 2007 to 2008, the first year of the Great Recession.  

“The results of this survey are not particularly surprising in view of current economic conditions,” says Sue Johnsonco-author of Grandloving: Making Memories with Your Grandchildren, now in its fifth edition. “I think all of us have friends or family where grandparents are either providing a home for or raising their grandchildren.”

Most unwed Baby Boomers are getting hitched, again.

 

 

Over three-quarters of divorced and widowed Baby Boomers will marry again, state the latest available statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau. In addition, over half (52 to 62 percent) of marriages will end in divorce. Not surprisingly, that leads to 43 percent of marriages actually being remarriages for at least one of the members of the couple. As a result, nearly two-thirds (65 percent) of remarriages involve children from prior marriages, creating a blended family.
