The Feminine Face of Poverty

Nearly 50 million people in the United States lived at the poverty level in 2010, says new data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Using a new method to measure the citizens’ SES, the bureau found that 16 percent of Americans are living in poverty, an even higher number than the previously recorded 15.2 percent, or 46.6 million. The latest number indicates that 49.1 million Americans are currently living at the poverty level. The annual income at which a four-member family—two adults and two children—is considered living in poverty was $24,343 in 2010 under the supplemental measure calculations.
The poverty crisis indicates fundamental, systemic problems that have erupted on a international level, contends Gary Bailey, MSW, ACSW, professor of social work at Boston-based Simmons College.
