Seniors holding on tight to sexuality as they age, say trendwatchers.

Mature adults entering assisted living homes refuse to leave their sexuality behind when they move in, say experts examining older adults and sex. Eldercare residents have researchers on their side arguing that sex is a basic human need, which shouldn’t be denied just because of their living arrangements, experts say.

In an effort to overcome logistical issues—like dementia or lack of privacy—homes like Riverdale, NY Hebrew Home determines whether residents have the capacity to give consent. If they do, staffers say, they have the go-ahead. Residents at Hebrew Home, says the  Iconoculture report, also are allowed to posses sexually explicit materials.

Acknowledging senior sexuality is a “sign of the times,” says stress management expert and self-help author Debbie Mandel, M.A. “Sex has always been expressed overtly or covertly, as it is a basic human need.”

With older Baby Boomers and Matures expressing such open, honest attitudes about sexuality, what do these cohorts have that previous ones didn’t have?

“Baby Boomers broke the box sexually with free love and openness about sexual expression—revealing their bodies sensually like women without bras wearing minis,” Mandel says. “Boomers have stayed true to their identity.”

Keeping up an active sex life, Mandel says, helps seniors maintain their happiness, have more energy, stay optimistic, improve healing and enhance stress relief.

The best way for people to continue to feel sexy long into their senior years, she advises, is to exercise.

“Getting physical increases libido, generates testosterone and improves circulation,” Mandel explains. “Then, just do it!”
